Breast Cancer Facts and Risk Factors

According to the CDC, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among U.S. women. Although screening cannot prevent the disease, it can help find breast cancer early, when it’s easier to treat. An estimated 288,000 U.S. women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, and 43,000 died from breast cancer in 2024.

Studies show that breast cancer risk is mainly linked to gender, age, genetics, and dense breast tissue, along with other factors. View CDC Breast Cancer Statistics.

Screening

The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends women between ages 40 and 74 get a mammogram every two years.

A mammogram, an X-ray of the breast, is typically the best way to detect breast cancer early. Breast cancer is easier to treat if found before it’s large enough to feel or cause symptoms. Mammograms can lower the risk of breast cancer deaths when obtained at recommended timelines.  Learn more.

  • Is it covered by my insurance? Yes, mammograms and other preventive services are covered benefits under your HMAA health plan. Generally, one mammogram per calendar year is covered for women ages 40 and older. Coverage exclusions or limits may apply.
  • What should I do next? HMAA recommends that you schedule an exam and/or discuss getting a mammogram with your physician (usually an OB-GYN). Or, you may schedule an appointment at a mammography center since a physician referral is not required.
